The Luneburg Fire Service is a wholly unpaid volunteer force with 230 active operational personnel, responding to around 700 calls a year from two very large and modern fire stations, more or less straddling this city of around 76, 000 inhabitants.
Although all volunteer, they do employ paid maintenance staff to care for their stations, appliances and equipment.
The fleet includes two rescue pumps, seven pumpers, two ladder towers, an aerial platform, one heavy rescue, one water rescue, one hazmat truck, six personnel vans, two command cars, two staff cars, a general purpose truck, three motor boats and five assorted special purpose trailers.
In most German states, towns with less than 100, 000 population are not required to have a paid full-time fire service, although they are not precluded from having some full-time staff if they so desire.
Typically, towns the size of Luneburg are all-volunteer, but they do all have multiple fire stations, large numbers of active volunteers and lots of equipment...
Most of the Luneburg appliances continue to be Mercedes, but six are on MAN chassis.
