True! Chicago still operates an 85 foot Snorkel which has been in service for close to thity years.

Now it is "special called" and responds with only a driver to major multiple alarms at large commercial and industrial structure fires, where it is operated in the role of a high capacity water tower.

Chicago is remembered as the first city in the World to operate Snorkels in the early 1950s. Now the fleet is limited to this reserve unit and two 55 foot snorkels, which operate as a component of Rescue Cos 1 and 2. They are illustrated on this site, and their replacements are about to be delivered soon. Although there are only two, they respond to a large number of working and multiple alarm fires, because of their ability to get water into places other apparatus cannot access.
