London Fire Brigade H21 Bromley AEC Regent V Merryweather TL (TL19) CBY1, note the monitor was not fitted as the appliance room doors couldn't be closed if it was!
I used to drive the TL at Bromley in the 60s. It was an ex Kent 1936 Merry weather. It was refurbished by KFB to save money but reputedly cost more than a new one. It went like the clappers. The mobile mechanic fitted an extra strong clutch pedal because it kept burning out. Good idea! but it needed all your strength to depress the pedal.
That'll be the AEC/Merryweather TL YKP177 fleet No TL7 in the LFB, ended up at Lambeth. It was in preservation in KFB livery and Folkstone name plates.
I too used to drive this lovely machine. I was at Scadbury Manor fire, Orpington and, the Phillips building fire in London Road Croydon in the early 70s. The latter being the closest event I've witnessed to the Towering Inferno film. An old school dream machine to operate.
David Gorton, if you were at Bromley in the early 1970's then it wouldn't have been this one. Bromley had JUL62D from 1966 until the mid 1970's. CBY1 was only at Bromley as a spare towards the end of its front line service
