It would appear that the London Fire Brigade purchased 21 S&D chassis in Aug Sept 1980, registration numbers GYW609W to GYW632W and 27 in July 1979, registration numbers YHV185T to YHV205T. The coach builder appears to have been Cheshire Fire Engineering. Of these 48, 10 were with Hydraulic Platforms. Talk about putting all of your eggs in one basket!
Ed: it would have been a formal public sector tendering exercise. CFE became Saxon later and the re-cabbed some of these. I think they rusted - and lengthened some of the HPs
The S&D units sold to London were by contemporary accounts tendered at depressed pricing levels to ensure the firm would beat out Dennis, who were the successful bidders for many earlier contracts. The thinking was that London purchases influenced other municipalities through the “halo effect”, and that these large orders would result in a lot of additional business for S&D in their relatively new fire appliance venture.
