Thanks, it's listed in"The Fire Brigade Handbook Special Appliances-Volume 1" as a Mercury, but in "The Fire Brigade Handbook" 1995 edition as a Regent, and the 1996 Edition as a Regent V!
Before Bromley had CBY 1, which, in fact, is ex- Croydon County Borough Fire Brigade, it had an AEC Regent/ Merryweather TL, YKP 177. This may be where the confusion comes from. YKP 177 was built for Kent Fire Brigade, and transferred, along with Bromley fire station, to London Fire Brigade, in 1971. I believe it is now preserved, in Kent Fire Brigade livery.
Bromley was Transferred to GLC control in 1965 along with the rest of what was the Kent Fire Brigade's A Div. As for YKP177 I have a pic of this at Bromley in KFB livery and at B22 Lambeth in GLC LFB livery. The YKP177 was proberley transferred to London as it was a Non-Standared machine along with all the KFB Leyland Comet's, as Kent had a fairly standed fleet of Commers. The TL at Bromley before YKP177 was a Bedford SH/Morris-Magirus reg No.546DKN
I think (CBY 1) was removed from service in 1981/2. It was stored at B22 and later at Lambeth Workshop. I am not sure what became of it after that? Although I was aware that various people showed interest in it's number plate. Can anyone advise?
CBY 1 remained on the run at Bromley until 1986, when it was replaced by a Dodge/Carmichael/ Magirus TL. It is still owned by London Fire Brigade, as a preserved appliance.
I hate to correct you, Mike, but I saw CBY 1, on the run at Bromley, in September 1984. It was the station's open day, and there was a board, propped up against it, explaining how Bromley Council had bought the first TL, for the borough, and this (supposedly) meant that Bromley would always have a TL. I also recall seeing the same appliance, at Bromley, after that. To the best of my recollection, the Dodge TL, which replaced it, did not arrive until 1986. Also, if you are reading this, could you please tell me what was the wheelbase of a standard AEC Mercury TL, such as CBY 1, and what was the wheelbase of the London version?
No idea Bill, but I have the vehicle log book from the time and the F47 saying June 1984. Let me dig it out and I will photocopy it. As soon as it was taken out of service it was mothballed at H23 Sidcup and taken care of by an MRV from Brigade Workshops.
I remember a training evening at Bromley where I served in the AFS 1960 to 1968 I was was raised to the maximum height and had a good view over Bromley
Really like your pic's
Would love to have a private chat with you
Could you please email me back?
Many thanks
