1975 rear of Cambridge fire station. This was the first brigade to use the term Fire and Rescue Service under CFO John Maxwell. This was in the days when firefighters climbed on the roof!

tayside used these for many years , brilliant fire appliance with great performance from the perkins v diesel, great roadholding being low and wide , plenty room for the small amount of kit we carried in those days and room in the back for 4 although I remember the sets were not very easy to put on as they were facing you in an open locker , overall good fire engine and much used by many brigades north of the border

Alan, I remember them well. My father served from 1962-1977. left 3 months before the strike and drove these machines plus others. I used to Live and still do near the now sadley demolished old Station 2 Strathmore Avenue Dundee and witnessed many a turnout. You knew it was a fire engine with the roar of the Perkins engine. LoL. Happy days.

You'd have thought that Tayside Regional Council would've slapped a preservation order on the old Strathmore Avenue fire station dating from 1932. Passed it many a time on my jollies into Dundee over the years but never got out and photographed it. I fully concur with you Grant about the Perkins V8-540 engine. What a sound and sight en route to a job.

PVE 833N - this then served at Chatteris, my home town retained station from June 1977 until Spring 1988 when it was replaced by a Dennis RS135, again powered by a Perkins V8.

The Perkins V8 diesel showed up in a wide variety of fire engine chassis in those days. You could theoretically have a Dennis, a Dodge, an ERF, a Ford D series and a Shelvoke together in one appliance room - all with Perkins V8 engines!

It was powerful and torquey, but it did make its presence heard...
