There are three different levels of Rustwagen in the German Fire Services, with increasing amounts of rescue equipment as the numbers (and truck sizes) increase from 1 to 3. They do not usually have a crew cab, as they always respond with other units.

Level 1 units, like this one, are slowly dying out as Rescue Pumpers (LHF or HLF) are becoming much more common. Many RW1s were Unmogs like this example in the 1980s and 1990s, because of their unique off-road abilities and their bulletproof durability.

They were, however, not designed for high speed driving, especially around corners, and a number were themselves involved in accidents while on the way to incidents.
