The tilt cab Ford C series was probably the most popular single fire engine chassis in American history, as it offered a very practical and rugged design at comparatively low cost.
They were bought by most major city fire departments, as well as hundreds of small volunteer companies on a limited budget. Although most were pumpers, Ford C series were used for aerials, rescues, hose wagons, foam tenders, salvage rigs, air and/or lighting units, tankers and command vehicles in various places.
The Ford Cargo, which replaced the C series, did not offer the same range of high-powered engine options; as a result, it saw very little use with fire departments, although it remains very popular as a fire engine chassis in Brazil.
