Possibly explains why many UK fire brigades stayed with solid rather than pneumatic tyres for so long - most well into the 1920s and many even into the 1930s.
The earlier pneumatics were prone to getting punctured by horseshoe nails, which were often scattered on roadways after coming loose, and it obviously took a while to change a tyre!
It seems spare tyres were not always carried - perhaps it was something that CFOs specified if they had already had bad experiences with punctures?
