Dennis SS131, original registered as A799TYO and based at London Fire Brigade Chelsea staion. Imported to South Africa around 1999 and now being restored in Johannesburg.
I imported around 20 of these RS's SS's between 1997 and 2000 and they were sold to various Municipalities around South Africa. In 2000 the new fire truck manufacuturers complained to the DTI that I was affecting their business. I was not allowed to import any after this.
Hi Robert , it goes to show what a lot of people are thinking back here and thats that the better off brigades sell off appliances long before the end of their usefull life , i assume they gave sterling service for many years and belies the cry that thay cannot get spares and thats why they are sold off!its a shame you had to stop importing them I bet the brigades you sold them to were very happy with the dennises
I'm sure most of these Dennis's are still in service in towns in South Africa. Most of them went to towns that just didn't have a fire engine and couldn't afford a new one. I still sell ex UK fire engines to other countries in Africa and I have sold 16 to Fire Departments in Argentina in the last 3 years including Dennis Rapiers and Sabres. They change them to left hand drive and manufacture parts if required.
