The F2 was a postwar hangover from the Braidwood open body design that went back to Dennis' first centrifugal pump appliance, which was delivered in 1908!
In 1949 you could also buy an F7 from Dennis, which was a forward control fully enclosed mid-mount pump, and the forerunner of the slightly later and almost ubiquitous F12.
Amazing that any fire service actually still purchased any F2s!
Presumably, it was because Dennis could just not keep up with demand for their much more modern product.
I guess they must have thought that Firemaster Braidwood knew best, and that no progress had been made since he invented the ride-on fire appliance in the 1840s.
Given both countries' wet climates, I should have thought they would have been keen on buying enclosed appliances, but that seems too obvious.
In my nasty suspicious commercial mind, I can't help thinking perhaps Dennis had some F2 parts left in inventory, and may have been only too keen to build these last units to clear the decks of these obsolete items. They did after all continue building F12s for something like two years after the F 20 series were introduced.
