1971 HCB/Angus ERF Water Tender Ladder Fleet No12 at Roath Fire Station. NOTE two sets of two-tone horns! NOTE City of Cardiff whereas it was Cardiff City. Cardiff personnel will note also that no 'go faster tape' has been applied yet to this smart machine. Most if not all Cardiff appliances were diesel and automatic gearboxes being introduced. The ladder this side is an alloy two-piece roof ladder. The main is a Lacon 13.6m or similar and on the off-side is an alloy 26ft. You'd certainly hear this coming!

Looking good in shiny old fashioned red bodywork, mercifully devoid of any colorful stripes, chevrons or battenburg. I really do wonder if these later “inventions” have actually helped make life safer for firefighters and/or other road users. Interesting that, despite trying to find out, I have been unable to come across any scientific “before and after” studies anywhere which proved the case for any of these ideas, not to mention the once much loved Coventry yellow and of course the short lived fad for dayglo red!
