FKG 51 Pump Escape AEC Cardiff City

AEC PE of Cardiff City Fire Service, based at Westgate Street 1965. The 50ft Escape Ladder was an all-steel Merryweather. This vehicle was ancient when i drove it from 1972 on. Behind the PE is its constant companion the AEC Pump also Westgate Street (Central Fire Station) Cardiff. Looks like Grangetown area of Cardiff. The light hose is two and three quarter inch RRL while the red in the foreground is 75ft x one and three quarter inch plastic covered. This was used as the branch length as it was more flexible.

Cardiff seems to have had the same idea as almost all German fire services when it comes to hose use. Normally a 75MM (3 inch) is used from the pump to the front of the fire building, where it terminates in a controlling 3 way coupling with one 75 and two 52MM (2 inch) outlets. The attack hose(s) is/are 52MM, unless a ground monitor or ladder monitor feed is called for.

They normally use a 400 LPM branch with the 52MM hose, but it can also be used with the 800 LPM branch if the hose length is short.

The location of this incident appears to be North Clive St, Grangetown, this building used to be Freemans Cigar Factory before they moved to a modern purpose built complex nearby on Penarth Rd, Cardiff
