TOM 432H Pump Escape 1970 Registration

Beautiful,eh? Dennis Rolls Fleet No 32 seen in yard of Central Fire Station (A1),of Birmingham Fire & Ambulance Service. Carries a 50ft timber Ajax trussed wheeled escape ladder, 30ft timber (far side) Ajax, 14ft timber Ajax (this side) and an aluminium Hook Ladder. the new Carter sirens were much inferior to the old ones of the same make, moaning rather than screaming! The electric bell was rarely used. Centrifugal main pump could be operated either side of the machine with two deliveries also each side. The hose-reel pump was perihperal type giving pressures up to 500psi though i normally used 250-300.Hose reels (each 180ft)are one each side in lockers over rear road wheels.Road wheels of Dennis/Rolls Breakdown Lorry based at Central can be seen top left.

Great picture, Tony. And a beautiful machine. I can (just about) remember seeing these on the streets of '70s Birmingham. Unusual-looking beacons though. Were these an early strobe type?

Hi Yelp, no the lights were still rotating. I called them 'jam-pots'. They were so shaped that the varying thickness of the glass/plastic was supposed to act like a magnifier. Worked fine - at the right angle!
