Mid mount aerials are less common these days, but a lot of mid mount towers are still in use in New York, principally because their low height fits into many older fire stations where a rear mount tower ladder would be too high.

This example nicely illustrates the plumbing for the basket monitor - a typical setup in North America which European ladder manufacturers do not seem to have emulated.
