Not the most popular chassis the R type Mack for the Fire Service but like all Macks are loved by the Fire Fighters who use them for their reliabilty and toughness ...another blinding image Warren many thanks

Actually Gary, many R model chassis were used by manufacturers such as 4-Guys, Swab, Saulsbury, and others to build tankers and heavy rescue squads.

Warren your right of course ....but not in the same numbers as say the ubiquitous Ford C 800 series thats what I meant to say , your right you do see them and a few are still around to this day in fact I am sure FDNY mounted some rescues on the R type for example , the R types were not so frequently used for your standard pumper/engine thats what I was trying to say .

Gary, I understand you mean the Mack R custom fire apparatus, of which 381 were built by Mack. Compare this with the 3, 849 of the famous Mack CF series, a 10X difference! A good number of the tanker rigs, including tractor-trailer tankers, used the commercial model R, of which an incredible 210, 238 were built from 1966-89.
FDNY had 8 R model rescue squads, and 5 rare 4-door pumpers, there were also open semi-cab model R pumpers built for Port Vue, PA. and Albuquerque, NM.
