Arnaud, what is the black thing that hangs in front of the center of the windshield? Many recent French fire trucks seem to have one. Is it an extra mirror to see down in front of the truck?

This mirror is specially adapted to certain maneuvers of vehicles, especially when it is rolling backwards. It is now mandatory in the Highway Code.

It is a downward facing mirror Mike - to enable the lower front of the vehicle (and more importantly whats in front of it) to be seen - British vehicles have them as well - along with mirrors to see whats directly alongside of you on your opposite side - mainly pedestrians and cyclists or motor bikes !

These latest FPT are all Renaults, following earlier purchases on Mercedes Atego chassis, the BSPP are moving back to an all-Renault fleet, with a rather odd recent exception in the shape of three Scania aerial platforms - which are so far the only three APs in their fleet. The remaining 60 aerials are Renault and Mercesdes ladders of either 24M or 30M extension, including 7 with baskets.

All of the newer 49 PS first response light pumper and ambulance combinations are equipped with CAFS, but it is not clear if these new FPT sre similarly equipped. The FPT pumpers are gradually replacing older Iveco multi-purpose pumpers, which have a similar specification but with a much smaller water tank.
