i last saw F509 WAD at the fire service college open day in 2007 in moreton on marsh. I believe it was this vehicle

Not so Simon, this one is that which was D272 BFH. As regards F509 WAD, it went from Gloucestershire to BaE, Hatfield, and from there to Hertfordshire FB, where it was probably used by the fire cadets, its function with Herts is not shown on the database.

Although i've often seen this, can someone explain the purpose of painting the wheels red / white.

Yes, I think Avon did it first, Tyne & Wear did also. When the appliance was in motion, the wheels themselves actually became something of a visual warning as a result of their conspicuity.

Ian, thanks, I guessed that might be why. That said if it's coming up behind something in traffic, the vehicles in front won't be able to see the wheels anyway!

Very fair point. They did work on a broadside basis though.

The vehicles in front can't see the rear lights, the vehicles at the rear can't see the front lights, but all vehicles can see some of the lights, so they are all of use, same with the wheels.
I believe it was F777 UDD that went to La Victoria, Peru.

D272 BFH is on this site at pictue #22506. I do not think this is the same as the Irish appliance above. 272 was a Chevrolet Locomotors and not carmichael bodied. F509 WAD is also on this site at picture 3764. According to eircom F777 UDD went to Tara mines in Ireland and was also Telehoist bodied.
Peter: I was given F776 UDD as the one that went to the Mines, and can only say that I was given D272 BFH as having first gone to the Civil Defence where it received the registration number shown on the above picture.

F509 WAD Whilst at Herts FRS was used by the Commercial Training Unit. I used to take it to a few shows then Brigade let it go to auction as Commercial Training Dept were given N Reg Dennis Sabre to use instead
