Fire Engines Photos

Most unusual, the Germans are one of the best fire engine manufacturers in the world, so why choose a Scania????.

The Fire man at this station told us that Scania was very cooperative and flexible with the Fire dept. wishes regarding the crew cab. So I guess it is efficient and cheaper to choose one builder for the fleet.
And doesn't this engine looking smart with the Day glow colour and gray/black lockers and ladder?

Aren't Scania and M.A.N. in partnership or linked together in some way or another? It seems now wherever you see Scanias you see M.A.N.s. So Germany shouldn't be any different really - however much it might niggle the Germans! (Nowadays you can even find German hardwear on the streets of Paris. And I can't remember the last time we saw that...)

The whole design, smart as it is, reminds me of the Playmobile fire vehicles my son's had a few years ago. Maybe Playmobile were ahead of their time when it came to design, as we now see the real thing resembling them!

MAN and Scania are both Volkswagen daughters but cooperation until now was not really free of friction. I just read that Volkswagen is making some changes in their board. Scania boss Leif Östling is said to go to the Volkswagen board of directors and will be responsible for the truck business there.

On the topic of German trucks, Mercedes are not only the standard in London, home of such once-famous brands as Merryweather, Dennis, ERF and S&D, but in Amsterdam (home of DAF), Paris - where they have displaced Renault - and even Italy's national Vigili del Fueco, which used to run the local Iveco trucks almost exclusively. Nearer home, American La France is owned by Freightliner, which itself is a Mercedes subsidiary. Looks like the three-pointed star is heading towards something approaching domination of the fire engine business on at least two Continents!

actually Freightliner sold American LaFrance to an investment group in 2005. So Mercedes is actually not building any fire engines only chassis used for fire engines.

Last I read is that they are planning to move their production site and to "streamline" their business.

Hi Marcel! The color on the ladder and the lockers is Schwarzgrau (german for Black Grey), Ral 7021, Fs 37031.

Two responses, as an ex london firefighter of 30 years I have used and driven many types of appliance and generally speaking they have been a step forward in design, ease of use and driving , that is apart from the old erf as I have been told and the mercedes atego of late which is a dog of an appliance and the proof is the lack of take uo by other brigades , it is relatively rare in the uk , london did not buy the mercedes this decision was taken away from them many years ago by the use of a leasing company which has a dubious financial history to say the least , the brigade issue specifications and it was pretty much take what you get , I know some will argue against this but I believe it to be the case, the mercedes is not particularily reliable and the chassis isnt really beefy enough to cope with the stresses put upon it, it is not a speedy appliance but is relatively easy to drive and is low with easy access, the plastic body has issues but hese are not of mercedes making but as it is under chassied this is part of its issues, all in all there are better out there, it used to be the case that what london used others followed but not now.

I hope the locker paint is of a better quality than the lockers that we have which are painted a light grey, it has bubbled and is falling off on 05/07 appliances but have been doing this for several years with the cost of repair too much we have been told so until the appliance are replaced we have been left with unsightly vehicles, every locker on all purchased with painted instead of plain alloy have suffered and the brigade no longer purchases such style but the damage ois done and we are stuck with them for now so good luck with the pretty black paint, alloy is very difficult to paint succesfully.
