This is a vehicle you don't see often with a Fire brigade. It's a 1995 Mercedes Benz 2538 K 6x4/ Assmann Vacuum Cleaning truck. It can soak up dangerous fluids. License plate KA -2160.

Among the many highly specialized trucks and pods used by German fire services, units to deal with hazmat incidents - including spills - have been around for many years, starting with tankers for sucking up oil spills in the early 1970s.

Karslruhe, with a population of 300, 000 has a full time fire service working out of two principal fire stations, backed up by sixteen volunteer fire companies. The fleet includes numerous units for all kinds of hazmat incidents, which is typical for this size city. But Karlsruhe is one of only a few German cities which operates a large fleet of appliances on Scania chassis these days.
