Some of these Vario compact first responder light pumps are being replaced now by slightly larger 9 ton Ategos, as Vario production has been discontinued. These are used for small urban outdoor fires, general service alarms and are first due to structure fires and other potentially serious incidents, with a crew of five or six. They share quarters with a major pump, which - among other things - has a 3000 liter tank and a crew of six or eight.

In addition most city stations have an aerial ladder, tower or platform - varying in height depending on the profile of the station's response area. A tanker - carrying from 6, 000 to 12, 000 liters - is also commonplace, even in large cities with hydrant systems. Even Madrid has several. The basic response to structure fires is normally a first aid pump, a major pump, an aerial and quite often also a tanker, with a minimum of fifteen crew.
