These basic pump water tenders of the Mumbai Fire Brigade were based on an older Mercedes truck chassis and driveline from the 1970s, built under licence in India.
They had a Dennis No 2 500 IGPM pump, a 1000 IG tank and carried a crew of six.
The large tank reflected the fact that in some areas of the city the fire hydrants were few and far between. At serious fires, these standard pump water tenders were often pressed into service to shuttle water from a hydrant to the fireground, supported on occasion by larger dedicated tanker trucks.
