Engine 10 FDNY leaving Station 10

I took this picture while visiting Station 10 in lower Manhattan (New York, January 2004). While we were visiting with some of the guys there, they got a call. That is when I took this picture. Note the garbage can on the tail board. It has salt in it for melting ice on the side walks after hooking up to stand pipes and etc. It was VERY cold when we were there. They were having all kinds of problems with the sprinkler systems around the city freezing up. Enjoy! FF Wayne Yanish

That road-salt is a good idea.
A winter fire-scene soon turns into a skating-rink - what, with connection leaks, overflows, wind-driven spray and water running off the fire.
People then get tired - nasty slips and falls on the ice - not to mention road-traffic sliding about.
Great photo of a loaded North American Engine - by European standards, everyone would be neatly stowed in lockers and compartments !

In winter time we have a small container in our truck which we strew once we have used a hydrant, larger areas are dealt with by a municipal department.
As we have mostly underground hydrants we also carry a small cylinder to heat up the lit of the hydrant(if frozen)

I watched an NYC engine company pull up on a working fire in January some years ago, only to discover the hydrant was blocked by a limo with 'Diplomat' plates. No problem: the Batt Chief wasn't on scene yet, so they popped the windows on either side and ran the lines through the car to the hydrant. Of course, it didn't take long for the car to fill with water, which then froze... but the engineer kept the lines "above water level", so it was no problem.

No problem for the FDNY... it may have been a bit more of a problem for the limo driver, who thought his "D" plates meant he could park where he pleased. Oh, well-- maybe he could call the Fire Department to chip the car out?

Great story, Francis! You have to respect our American friends' no-nonsense approach. I would love to have seen the look on the selfish driver's face upon returning to his vehicle!

Were firefighters to do that sort of thing here in the UK, they would undoubtedly be arrested, charged with criminal damage and then sacked.

Its a known fact that in all states in America it is an offence to park in front of a fire hydrant making it unusable.Learn by the comment above, when renting your car in the states-'Do Not Park'and obstruct a fire hydrant.It will cost you a fortune if its towed away, and especially if its flooded out.

Sounds to me to be common sense...alas, not all of us have it. If you've seen that scene in Backdraft (and who hasn't) one should know what the officers can do when they really need to.

I served as a chaplain with the Albany, NY Fire Department before going to the US Marines and Navy(I'm disabled now and volunteering in Portugal). We just lost a senior firefighter here in Porto-- a city of ancient, too-often vacant buildings and streets designed 500+ years ago for horses and pedestrians, not fire apparatus. Firefighting in Europe can be a great deal more dangerous than in the US for just those reasons.
May God have mercy on his soul.
