Fire Engines Photos

Thanks Colin, , are the landrovers from the AFS in Edinburgh?

Added by Ian Scott on 22 December 2011.

There appears to be a high roof Morris LD van in the right hand background, it seems to have some sort of badge on it too. I wonder if it is also a fire service vehicle?

Colin, many thanks for sharing this interesting photo. Do you know what the van parked to the right of the Land Rover's is used for. It looks like a Austin/Morris LD ?

Wonderful photo Colin, many thanks for sharing it. The Morris LD looks like Canteen Van DGA918B bodied by J.C. Bennett from Kelbourne Street and later Marine.

The Land Rovers were all from AFS Edinburgh. The Morris LD is (was?)the Glasgow Fire Service Canteen Van, serving very welcome hot tea on that dockside. (This type of Support Vehicle was unknown to those of us from Edinburgh!)

The Austin/Morris LD might be DGA918B Glasgows CaV based at Ingram St/Central and new in 1964.
At least thats the only one I can find in the Fire Brigade Handbook (Special Appliances)Volume two. Whilst on the subject of that book, isnt it about time all us Enthusiasts and Historians put together all the info for a third volume to cover the other appliances (WrL, WrT, PE etc)that havn't been covered yet?

Added by Chris Hall on 24 December 2011.

I cannot verify the Reg. No. of the CaV, but yes it was still 'new' at the time of our visit. Of the 3 Land - Rovers, the LWB one was 194 ELM, known throughout the Brigade as 'The Tree', and used as a GP vehicle after the demise of the AFS. (at one time we had lecture content stating we could shelter from a nuclear bomb in the back of those canvas topped Land - Rovers!)

Sounds good to me Chris - we also need to update vols 1 and 2 !!

Perhaps the answer would be to do it by vehicle manufacturer, i.e all the Dennis models, all the AECs and so on, much in the style of the other hand books. You would need more space to cater for all the allocations and subsequent movements though. It would be a mammoth task. What do people think? Also perhaps the answer to the update for the other two, would be to cover all the new style registrations and then a section with additional information for the previous vehicles already covered.Throw some ideas people!

Great idea Chris, but a very good proof reader with a vast knowledge of the fire service will be needed as I counted many mistakes in the two volumes pertaining to North Wales appliances and typing errors on others. Would have been nice to have been asked for my input at the time.

Colin / All, many thanks for the reply's regarding the LD van in this great photo. Paul.

Excellent suggestions, but I'm a bit puzzled about 'manufacturer'. On my first station, (McDonald Road, Edinburgh) we had a PE and P built on AEC chassis, but 'fire engine' completion by Carmichael. So would they be AEC's or Carmichaels? These two were 7285 SF and 7176 SC

Added by Colin Foster on 26 December 2011.

Colin - The correct answer to this is the simple one. They were AEC chassis with fire engineering and bodywork by Carmichael - hence the standard phraseology in these cases of AEC/Carmichael.

Thanks Ian, that is what I first thought, but a better example would be Merryweather, especially their TL's which were mounted on a variety of chassis. So, if your interest was Merryweather TL's (regardless of chassis) would a double entry work with a computer based data base? Maudsley is another prime example, are the Maudsley of AEC or the double entry? sorry to sound so confused but in my younger day we always referred to the machines as Merryweathers or Carmichaels, but also strangely we called all Bedford based pumps by the manufacturer.

Added by Colin Foster on 26 December 2011.

Colin,

The Marquis series of machines are a prime example of this, and something like the first 46 of what are commonly referred to as AEC/Merryweather are in fact Maudslay/Merryweather jobs. The earlier Regent series, often referred to as being Merryweaters bodied, did in fact have Merryweather fire engineering, and yet the bodywork was actually by Park Royal.

I remember the St. Mungo being placed into service. "The Fireman" magazine reported that it had a 6, 000 GPM pump, which was equal to around six or seven of the city's land pumpers!

Fireboats are still in service nowadays, of course, but they seem to be quite a bit less powerful. Does anyone know what happened to the St. Mungo and whether Glasgow still operates a fireboat?

I believe My uncle served on the ST.MUNGO fireboat during the 50/60's

I believe this photo was taken shortly after it was acquired, which I seem to remember was around 1963 or 1964.
