Who built the body on the appliance ? I've never seen a Commer with lift up locker doors

I was hoping someone could tell me..I remember a similar one to this being stationed at Preston in the East Riding

East Riding Fire Brigade had a few of these appliances that filtered through into Humberside - I don't remember any that had roller shutter doors all were lift up style - this one was, I'm sure owned by the late Steve Shaw from Huddersfield at the time of this photograph - we used to have 9194 BT (same style as this) as a spare pump or ET or Foam Carrier or whatever we needed at the time at Scunthorpe - it occasionally needed push starting !! and sometimes when an ET we couldn't get all the kit on it so it ran with a Landrover as well (ET part 1 and 2 they were nicknamed)

We also had Commer QX ? water tenders ex East Riding as Driver training vehicles UBT 252 and SWF 716 - again with lift up lockers - happy days !!!

Martin, Paul...

According to the 1985 Teeside Airport Program (sadly I was only 2 and I don't personally remember!), its a 1960 Commer QX4 Mk. 3 Carmichael.

Apparently served at Paddington all its life, Passed to Humberside in 1974, and was owned in 1985 & 1986 by a SJ Shaw of Huddersfield.

Davey, if it served at Paddington it must have 'got lost' on the way back from a shout !! - I'll guess you meant Patrington east of Hull on the way to Withernsea ?

Thanks for that Davey...I should have been less of a cheapskate in 1985 and bought a programme!

Come on Rick... Like I know that area?!? Simple typo.

I remember when I was about seven years old in 1972-ish our junior school visited our local fire station at Market Weighton. There were two Commers just like this one. On had the modern addition of a two-tone siren, but still retained the bell. The siren was operated by a button on the floor. The other engine just had the bell, being operated by the vehicle commander. As a foot note, Mrs Johnson (our teacher) was very disappointed to find that the station didn't have a pole to slide down...this was the one and only time that I saw her in trousers!

Rick (or anyone).....just doing a bit of Commer research. 2085 BT is now on a Fiat so do you have any idea it this appliance still survives with a new reg number?

Added by Simon Rowley on 21 March 2019.
I believe 2085 BT is now in Ireland and carries the number UVS 840.

Added by Mark Ashbridge on 13 November 2019.
Hi there, we have owned the 2085BT number plate from this vehicle for decades. My father passed away Dec 2019, but we still have the number plate in the family. Dad kept the original newspaper cutting of the engine with the plate. I'd love to know who owns the engine now. Dad would have loved this.

Darlington also had two Commer WTs with flap lockers.

These were a Whitson bodied type A NHN999 with a retrofitted 700 gpm pump from a prewar Leyland PE, as well as a Carmichael bodied type A RHN 999 with a Dennis No 2 retrofit 500 gpm pump from a former AFS trailer. Both went in turn to Teeside airport, after they were replaced in 1965 and 1968 respectively by Dennis diesel appliances.

All the Commer Miles bodied appliances, such as were supplied to Gloucestrshire and others, had roller shutters, but most of the other body builders' appeared with slam lockers in the early days.

Examples could be found in Kent, North Riding, York, Buckinghamshire and many other brigades, and there are photos of quite a few examples on this site...

A lot of brigades stuck with Commer for a long time, but many switched to more modern chassis such as Bedford, Dennis and Ford in the 1960s.

I am now being told the Whitson’s pump was donated by an AFS heavy unit and the Carmichael was a type B, if indeed it matters.

This contradicts what I was told at the time by a DFB sub officer, but of course he could have been misinformed...

Search "UVS 840" on Google and you see a photo in Ireland. Looks like same machine.

Google ' Pocklington History Fire Brigade' and there is one of these that is involved in a big fire, at the fire station!

The Leyland 6x4 wartime NFS fire engine on the history page is very impressive, anyone know anything about it?
