Needless to say I was a little bit disappointed when I got this photo back from the developers for an obvious reason! This is why I much prefer digital photography.

Photographed in Northgate, Cottingham in June 1983. I believe these appliances turned out from Hull North and Hull West as I have noted this on the back of the print, information that I must have got from my radio which alerted me to them going to this address but I may have misheard.

Oh Martin, these damn cyclists get everywhere. Wonderful photo otherwise.

GRH was put back on the run whilst the Dennis was rebuilt after the fatal crash in the early 80's which would account for it being out of North Hull

What a great photo of old meeting new(ish). Not often you would see a D reg appliance on the run in 1983 along with what looks like a T reg R series. Was the D reg running as a spare?

I live in the U.S. and can listen to North American and Australian Fire and Rescue services. But there is not any U.K.services on radioreference.com. Is it against the law to rebroadcast U.K. radio on the internet? I would love to heard how the London Fire Brigade sounds.

Hi Martin. Great to see this fantastic selection of photos you are sharing with us. Thanks very much. Do you happen to have any North Yorkshire appliances by anychance ?

Les the reason you can not get the UK is they have all gone digital. that means the radio is now a cell phone with multi channels each is allocated to appliances as they respond.

I was surprised to see such an old appliance when arrived...on my bike. I can't remember seeing this one on any other occasion when in Hull in the early 80s. I remember another reserve appliance that was a more common sight was, as I remember it, a Commer Carmichael probably ex East Riding. Long gone are the days when you could listen to the fire service on an ordinary transistor radio..I think it was on about 108FM. They reported when they were leaving the station and where they were going..that was each appliance as they went mobile...they then reported in attendance and what they were doing at the incident and pass their stop message...I do have a few photos of North Yorks appliances that I need to scan but I am pretty sure they are all in York. I have some North Yorks fire stations as well.

Hi Martin, many thanks for the interesting information. As you say you could at one time listen to all the calls on a regular radio. Where I live I could hear North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and Humberside, I have heard some very interesting and large incidents. Im looking forward to seeing your North York's pictures if you should post them.
