Although Sunderland Fire Brigade had operated a similar TL to this one, this appliance, photographed attending a false alarm in commercial premises in Fawcett Street, Sunderland in June 1987, was new to Tynemouth Fire Brigade in 1966.

Smoke from the front mounted exhaust. Wonderful days Martin and a wonderful photo.

There were several of these magnificent machines in the North East, they were as follows
SBR74 new to Sunderland F.B
OXG950 new to Middlesbrough
194SBB new to Newcastle & Gateshead
MCU723 new to South Shields
DEF420D new to West Hartlepool
CFT801D new to Tynemouth
JVK526D new to Newcastle and Gateshead

Of the above the Tynemouth and the Newcastle JVK---D are preserved, the Hartlepool one went to Cork County Fire Brigade but as far as its known is gone now, the South Shields one was at Monte's yard in Co Durham but was broken up a couple of years ago now, and the other two scrapped long ago- unless of course, someone knows differently?

Chris,
Fully agree with you on the above.

I went to see DEF420D when it was for sale (and in preservation) about 15 years ago. It was in reasonable condition and the ladder was operational.

Hello Barry, I didnt realise that DEF420D made it into preservation. As far as I understood it was advertised for sale at Teesside Airport rally in 1984 then went to Cork. They used it once and it had its ladders damaged and was subsequently out of use. It disappeared after that. Do you know if it still exists?
