FDNY - Ten HouseThis picture of FDNY's Ten House was taken in March 2011 and compliments Paul Warnock's photo 19656.
The firehouse was erected in 1979 and a plaque on the wall advises that the design and construction was under the New York's Department of General Services.
Prominent at the opening were the Mayor, Edward I. Koch, the President of the Council, Carol Bellamy, the Comptroller, Harrison J. Goldin, the President of the Borough of Manhattan, Andrew Stein, and the Fire Commissioner, Augustus A. Beekman.
As everyone will know, Ten House was severely damaged on 9/11 when the World Trade Center was destroyed but it was still able to play a vital role in the daily operations at ground zero during the rescue and recovery operations. It was used as a rest and recuperation station and command post for fire department operations at the site.
The website www.fdnytenhouse.com gives a graphic description of the Liberty Street station's history and says that the $3.5 million repair and renovation project took more than two years to complete and was funded in part by a $1.5 million grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
The re-opening ceremony was attended by hundreds of FDNY personnel and the ribbon was cut by the Mayor, Michael R. Bloomberg, and the Fire Commissioner, Nicholas Scoppetta.
Despite ten years having passed since those terrible events of 11 September 2001, Ten House is still a very moving location and brings back vivid memories of the WTC to those of us who watched the drama in disbelief as it unfolded in front of our eyes on television.
