Leyland Metz 150' being rescued

This historic picture was taken the day CKH407 was rescued from the cutters torch in 1971 by Tim Nicholson. His foresight ensured the 150' Metz survived. Ten years of all weathers has taken its toll. It was driven down to London.

I can see a wonderful story opening here and now just can't wait for the next part to be shown.
Thanks again Mike for cleaning the old dust off this classic picture to let us now appreciate the difficult task that was layed ahead, one hell of a task.

Kingston-upon-Hull Police Fire Brigade. Marvelous machine and well done Mike. Not an overnight job but good luck and we'll be more than happy to see her on the circuit in 2020.

It really would be great to see her. I have always wondered just how useful these huge ladders really were. Given the stability constraints of ground conditions, wind etc and the very limited effect of the jacks at anything like full ladder extension.

Retired from service in 1961 when AEC/Merryweather TL AT 4707 arrived in Hull. Mike, any idea at what stage her restoration is at the moment?

The very top extension had very small, in any side rails on the ladder can you imagine that? The firefighters of the day all trained at clipping themselves on the top (can't remember the name of the device)and climbing off the ladder (extended!)and then the device allowed them to do a controlled, limiting the speed of the descent.

Andrew - I need to correct you slightly the replacement TL was 7407 AT not AT 4707 (you must have a 'dyslexic finger' like me !lol !) see pic 28380 for a pic of this appliance in early 2011 - it is now sadly no longer with us !

Many thanks Rick, yes I have a dyslexic finger too. Any idea where she is now as her tax disc is not due yet?

What year was it originally placed in service?

Bill, if your talking about this actual appliance(CKH 407)of the Hull City Police Fire Brigade, the only Leyland/Metz 150'turntable in the UK, it was October 1936.
