Leyland FEU4 pump reg. MS3010

This picture taken in April is being posted by me as a sort of appeal.

The appliance was supplied new to Carrongrove Paper Mill, Denny in Stirlingshire in Feb 1921. It was then on solid tyres, the pneumatics being fitted probably in the early 1930s. It served Carrongrove until 1960 when it was given to Beaulieu Motor Museum.

Since then it has been in several hands on loan from Beaulieu including Worthing Historic Vehicle Club, Liphook Fire Station Social Club, Eastbourne Lion Preservation Group, Museum of Army Transport at Beverley and the Skopos Motor Museum in Batley.
It returned to Beaulieu some 10 years ago and was put in the 2003 Beaulieu Auction, it didn't sell.
Sold privately 2007? and purchased by me in April this year.

My appeal is for any information on the years 1960 to 2009 to pin down exactly when and where the vehicle was during that time, I have some indication on some of its History but it is very incomplete.
Also anyone who has photos during this period, or indeed at Carrongrove, would be much appreciated.

It is very solid condition and restoration will start later this year.

Many thanks

Hi Mike, when she was at the Army museum of transport, she was featured on a post card they used to sell in the shop, I think I have some in a box in my loft, I will see if I can find them, she was in pretty good nick then.

Hello Gordon
Many thanks for your comment, are you able to advise when MS3010 arrived at Beverley and also when Beverley sadly closed?
Many thanks, best wishes

This appliance was first stationed at Carrongrove paper mill less than a mile from where I live, At that time there was no fire service in the area & it used to frequently attend fires in the community.

FAO Mike, sorry Mike I carn't help you with the date that MS3010 arrived or departed Beverley, I only visited once and that was a few years ago, but I know the vehicle was not at the museum as I didn't see her and I had to be content with a few postcards.

Mike,
Hi I have some information and maybe some pictures of the Fire Engine whilst it was with the Liphook Fire Station Social Club. It went on the London and Brighton run some time in the 1970s and was used for a number of fund raising events. Is this link still live? Has the fire engine been restored as I am sure my Father in Law would be pleased if he could see it again. He has lots of memories.

I have a negative of MS 3010, part of a collection of negatives I bought in 1972 at Brighton. It shows MS 3010 at a display at Brighton probably in the late 1950's or early 1960's. Apart from the Dennis ED 810 all the rest of the negatives are of shipping in the Thames. Will scan and copy for you if you let me have n e-mail address.

Hello Hugh, I am sorry to have not replied before now but I have only just found your comment. Restoration has been held up for 12 months but is about to restart.
I would be most interested in a copy of your picture please.

I asked Mike why the photo above has WD on it. When it was at the military museum in Beverley this was added, but it is entirely made up as this was never a military machine. It was bought for a works fire brigade as above.

Many British fire brigades continued to specify solid tyres in the 20s and early 30s, despite the fact that pneumatics were already available for trucks, and were being adopted by fire services in many other countries. The reason was that there were still a lot of horse drawn delivery carts and vans in use in British towns, and cast-off horseshoe nails were a frequent cause of punctures in pneumatic tyres. Staying with solids eliminated the risk of having to fix a flat on the way to a shout, which was a time-consuming task to be avoided.

Even well into the 40s, brigades who bought pneumatics often specified a spare tyre on each appliance, just in case!
