Fire Engines Photos

Pete now part of a growing army of American fire trucks that are finding there way to the UK , I believe that there is also an ex Richmond VA tiller based over here , a London film company has recently purchased two Pierce pumpers for a new feature length production and a late model Seagrave tiller has turned up in Holland .

I bet the registration process was interesting dealing with the DVLA can be frustrating on occasions even with UK based veteran trucks....must have raised a few eyebrows very interesting to see such a rig in the UK .

Hello Gary.The Richmond Virginia Oran/Pirsh Tiller you've mensioned I photographed many years ago and can be seen on this site at(picture 9580).Another couple of pictures worth looking at which I've done are(picture 9579)which shows an old ALF pumper, and(picture 13359)which shows a lovely old 1960 Mack C95 pumper.All these vehicles now have a home over here in the UK.
Talking about registrations, I wonder if anyone noticed the reg on this apparatus(FYY440H).The letter'H'comes from the same year as the vehicle came into service-1970.

I used to live in Bethesda -- I was surprised to see our old tiller on this site with a British license plate! It's in really good condition.

Hello Mike, question is did you get a picture of her while in service at the station/firehouse?.
I'm sure there's afew American rig lovers like me would like to see this truck when it was actually on the departments roster afew year back.

Are you sure it didnt come from Distric Hights Maryland. They are Co. 26 and they had a 70 Hahn tiller just like that one.

I was the District shift commander in which sta 26 serves. that is their old tillered ladder. Note the seal on the door is for the Bethesda FD.

Well, it does say Bethesda 26 on the aerial ladder. Bethesda Fire Dept. is the only full-career (non-volunteer) dept. in Montgomery County, Maryland. It has 3 stations, numbered 6, 20, and 26 within the Montgomery County scheme. District Heights is also Station 26, but in Prince George's County, Montgomery's neighbor to the East. Both counties are immediately adjacent to Washington, DC. Hahn apparatus seems to have been popular in the 70s in the DC area -- DCFD also had a bunch of Hahn pumpers and maybe some tillers as well. I lived in Bethesda and worked in DC from 1975-2006, so I saw these engines frequently (though never photographed them...).

Thank you John and Mike for confirming this is Bethesda's Tillered Aerial.A plaque on the front of the tractor(cab)also states where it was from and also the current owner.Also, it is certainly a 4 section 100ft aerial ladder.

In 1970 District Hights bought a open cab Hahn with a Grove ladder. It was refurbed with a Spartian cab. When they got there new truck I think they sold it to Bethesda.But it was originally District Hights Truck 26.

That is not a 1970 Hahn! I'd guess more like a '77-'78 but definitely not a 1970.

Seems like a lot of confusion; this TDA started out at District Heights, MD. in 1970, and had an open-cab Hahn tractor (serial CDTA-3). A photo of this version is on pg. 61 of the 'Hahn Fire Apparatus Photo Archive'by Tom Shand, published by Iconographix.A identical Hahn engine was delivered in 1967, and was also recabbed with a Spartan by J.C. Moore in 1984
This rig was sent to Grumman in 1984 for refurbishment with the Spartan cab shown, also bodywork on the trailer.In 1996, their current TDA was delivered, so this was sold to Bethesda, which at the time had 3 truck companies and wanted a reserve. After a fleet of Pierce ArrowXT TDA'S were delivered several years ago to Montgomery Co. FRS, 1 went to replace Bethesda TRK 6, the last remaining BFD truck co( TRKS 20 & 26 were disbanded).TRK 6 had run the oldest ladder in Montgomery Co.;a 1984 Seagrave (xT-3)since 1989.The x-DHVFD rig then became surplus at Bethesda.
The rig is now a 1984 Spartan/1970 Hahn/1984 Grumman/Grove 100'TDA

Ah-ha..... maybe why I am confused on the year. We just got rid of a '71 Hahn and this cab looks the same in many respects but is also different in jast as many. Whatever the case, it is a sharp looking piece of apparatus.
