That went out of service in 2001? wow thats not bad for an old'un. Could this of been one of the longest serving appliances?

No, unless you mean in Scotland. We are running a 1992 K reg Prime mover Volvo (Water bowser) and 2 F reg 1988 Scania's, 1 which is a Foam Tanker the other a Prime Mover. although all three are down for replacement, they are running brilliant.

DK, this is a Y Suffix not prefix so at a guess it entered service around 1980 without checking when Y suffix came out.

there is still E plates operational in Edinburgh, so that is an age of about 23/24 years old, though second hand, one E750MDE(ex. MWW) is on the run and E396RSC (ex. IOM MAN999U in reserve)

This vehicle dates from 1983 and was based at Stn A1 Inverness.

E396RSC is still on the run at Sighthill in Edinburgh. Just back from a service and still going strong.

In many countries - including Germany - special purpose fire service units which do not respond to large numbers of calls are routinely operated for thirty or forty years. Volunteer fire companies often routinely replace their pumpers only after thirty years...

Even pumpers are commonly in service after forty years or longer in less busy fire departments in many South American countries.

These demonstrate that, as long as parts are available and proper maintenance is done, fire trucks from many countries of origin can remain in front line service for a lot longer than is common nowadays in most UK fire brigades.
