Where are you now?

I took this photo about three years ago with owner's permission. But, I have moved twice and now cannot locate the details. Somewhere in Surrey Woking/Guildford area. This used to be the British Thomson-Houston Co. Rugby Fire engine and I have recently obtained from USA an original Dennis advert with dates and commissioning I would like to pass to the owner, any help would be appreciated

Ah yes - the British Thomson Houston machine, that was never with Surrey, and never had a Surrey registration number. This one was in point of fact JUE 612, even though in preservation it carried the Surrey registration number. It was a Dennis F2, chasis number 3311, Job No. 40199, and was completed in February 1950.

This machine is a Dennis F2 and was manufactured in arounnd April in 1950 according to Dennis records. Although it wears Surrey Fire brigade livery I doubt if it was ever used there. The "A9" on the side would have referred to Surbiton fire station but I never saw an F2 there. Actually, all station numbers were in white on a small black rectangular removable plate, not signwritten or by decal. Would this have been owned by Alan Greenwood, who is based somewhere near Chobham I think.

Ian Moore's mentioned this could be JUE612 which in actual fact was manufactured in 1948.I posted a picture of the mentioned Dennis F2 and this can be viewed at picture 6339 .And yes, it was owned by Alan Greenwood of Chobham, Surrey.

The F2 was a really olde-worlde machine in 1950 - or even 1948 - with its only slightly modified Braidwood body and rear mounted pump. Apart from the 8 cylinder RR engine and the front styling, it could be 1932! The F7 and/or F12 showed up before 1950, and was a much more modern enclosed forward-control dual purpoae with a center-mounted pump and a larger hose reel tank. Why was anybody buying these F2s in 1948-9-50?

Was ordered new from Dennis in 17th June 1949 by BTH Rugby at a cost of £2517, Aquisition No 544934. It was on the front page of Fire the Fire Brigade journal in April 1950 in which it states after many years of service in export countries it was the first in English Industry

Funnily enough I have just come across a photo of Surbiton in the early fifties, with an F2 and a WW2 heavy unit outside. No Reg. No. visible, but if this was a restoration job by Alan Greenwood it would make sense, because Surbiton was his own local station when he was young.

www.vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/ shows JPE 612 as not available but JUE 612 as first reg.17th. Feb. 1950. JUE is of course a Warwickshire reg. not a Surrey reg. which fits with BTH Rugby. This is not the first (apparent) example of re livery of ex Industrial Pumps to Local Authority. I cannot imagine why

Alan Greenwood had a number of appliances in the 1990's all restored in Surrey livery, the collection was reduced by a sale in the early 2000's but he has recently come back to the fold with a couple of appliances been restored by Ron Bradley, I believe he still owns the F2.

Yes I have owned this fire engine since 1987. The reason it had Surrey FB on it was because it was used in a film. However today it is restored in its original livery, after a catastrophic fire on a low loader on a motorway. We won the London to Brighton three times with this appliance.
