Warsaw - with 1.86 million citizens - has seventeen full time fire stations, as well as a central fire academy which also responds to incidents and three additional volunteer fire stations on the outskirts of the city. The staff numbers close to 1800 and the stations’ response areas vary considerably, with the more densely populated inner response areas much smaller than those in the often sparsely populated outskirts. Unlike many other European countries, Polish fire services do not operate EMS ambulances.
