Bedford Red (Green) Goddess

NYR 120 is a former AFS EP (Emergency Pump) later bought by the South of Scotland Electricity Board at Longamnet Power Station. Note that unlike most of the Goddesses featured on this site, this is the 4 x 2 version, note the position of the headlamps and hose reel is at the rear of the machine.

This looks great in red! I wish the Home Office had started out painting them like this, to look like real fire engines....

Around 1000 of the 1800 RL 4X4 Green Goddesses were never issued to fire srations, which may explain why these are the majority of those still surviving. Apart from strike service, most of them had no active fire service mileage.

There were 1300 of the earlier rear drive S types like this example, and I believe all of these were assigned to the AFS at operational fire stations. Although none of them could ever be described as being busy, some of these got to go out in the rain quite often.

Barrie do you recall the plate number of the (Red) Green Goddess that was at Fiddlers Ferry Power Staion near Widnes/Warrington many years ago?
