FDNY Rescue Co 4 was a 1979 Mack/Pierce body Heavy Rescue and was housed with Engine Co 292 at 64-18 Queens BLVD in the Borough of Queens. This was one of 3 Mack/Pierce Rescues ordered in 1979 and were delivered late in 1980 and registered MR7901-MR7903.
Hi Justin. Interesting to know this vehicle is still on the run. Have any photo's you could post please, I would be very interested in seeing it as it is now. Thanks. Paul.
Yes, this old Mack/Pierce of Rescue Co4 is still known to be around.I thought it was being put up for sale recently though?. It would be nice to see a picture of her after her time with the FDNY at her current location and in the present livery.
No surprise! These Macks - and their precursors, as well as those that came later - were are (and often still are) deservedly famous for their quality, reliability, rugged dependability and longevity.
Service lives of fifty years or more, sometimes in the hands of three or more departments, are well documented, with many still on the run in different South American countries as well as serving as reserves and parade trucks here.
It is a pity the Renault management decided to pull out of the fire truck business after they acquired Mack, because they could have continued to dominate the custom chassis business...
The US is unique in that it still has a big enough market for so many custom fire truck builders to be surviving, but of course a lot of the older specialists have gone out of business over the years too, including Pirsch, Maxim, American La France, Crown and Ward La France.
By the way, I think Sutphen are also still in business.
As a consultant to Renault working on the Mack acquisition, I recall that at the time there was a lot of discussion about resurrecting the new custom fire truck chassis, of which I seem to remember two had been built. The Mack team were keen to pursue this strategy, but Renault management thought it would be a distraction...
