Bosham Fire Station.1952-2011.

The West Sussex Fire Station at Bosham on the 31st March,2011 will close its doors for the very last time when the station is closed due to Government cut-backs on Local Council expenditure.
This photograph was taken back in the late 1970's and shows the station exactly as it was when first opened back in 1952.The appliance behind those lovely wooden teaked doors is a 1973 Dennis'D'Series WrL with the registration CPO 629L.
The Bosham Brigade have given some 70 years loyal service to the village, community, and to the County of West Sussex, its now a pity more could not have been done to save this typical rural fire station.

Its a shame we in Warwickshire are loosing 3 stations. A sad time.

Oh dear Pete, it will be a sad day on the 31st in your part of the world. Are anymore stations due to close ? Paul.

Added by Paul Warnock on 30 March 2011.
Paul, back in January, Horley, East Preston and Lancing lost their 2nd pumps, today, the 31st March, 2011 three retained stations will be completely closed. The stations in question are Bosham, Keymer and Findon.
Due to these cut-backs which were proposed last year, no new appliances were purchased during 2010 by the brigade, but already at this difficult time when stations are now being closed, we have 6 surplus appliances, and yet already money's being found and new pumps are now arriving??????.
I'll not get into politics, but something certainly going a miss here, and at the moment Bosham, Keymer and Findon Fire Stations are surely the ones that'll be missed.

Goodbye Bosham. Thanks for all your service and to the dedication of all your crews to your community over the years. You will be missed.

My Pa was a close friend of Bosham resident Gerry Marcuse. I was introduced to Gerry and his wife Irene at their house "Tidewaters" when I was about six. I would often play in the grounds and on board a boat or two. I remember traveling with Gerry and Irene to Bembridge I O W to collect a handbuilt small open boat which we brought back to Bosham. Gerry had a role with the Bosham Fire Station and I was often treated to a ride on the old fashioned Fire Engine. This was the 1950's and included sailing with my Pa and Gerry on a yacht owned by Harry ?. My family and I were deeply saddened when Gerry Marcuse died. We lived in Farlington on Portsdown Hill and my stamping ground was Hayling Island, Langstone and Chichester harbours. Bosham always remained a top favourite up to 1967. The year I left England for Australia when I was 20. My last company of employment was Brickwoods where I worked in the Architects Dept.My happy memories of Portsmouth, Hampshire and West Sussex remain, a fabulous time to grow up in. I am 78 in four weeks, very active and loving life to the full. Peter Vickers-March. Architect (Ret) B 1st March 1967 - Portsmouth.

I am disappointed that UK fire brigades are closing retained fire stations for economic reasons when almost every other country in the World (including Scotland) has solved the problem of affording fire protection in small communities by the simple expedient of recruiting and training unpaid volunteers. In most countries around 70 to 75 percent of all firefighters are volunteers. In some places, including Germany, Austria, Poland and the Czech Republic it is over 95%!

In most South American countries it is also very high, and - for example - Chile is 100% volunteer, including the capital Santiago with 5.5 million residents. Tokyo, the largest metropolis in the World, has 80% of its fire stations staffed by volunteers, demonstrating that it is not something confined to small rural communities.

In the Anglo Saxon world, both Australia and New Zealand are well over 80% unpaid volunteers. One posting on this site mentions that without volunteers New Zealand would not have a fire service!

So I continue to fail to understand why England remains so resistant to a very widespread - indeed almost universal - solution to successfully providing adequate fire protection for its people in a way which is so well proven to be effective and affordable.
