Berlin operates 41 tower ladders with baskets, including reserves. There are fourteen different specifications, purchased at different times, but they are all referred to as 23/12 meter. (This defines a 12 meter horizontal reach at 23 meters height).
The majority are Metz on MAN chassis, like this one, but there are also a few IVECO-Magirus examples, including two with low-profile bodies.
This dayglo paintwork is one of three different liveries, as Berlin does not repaint older units when the standard livery is changed. Most of the ladders are assigned to the 34 full-time stations, but a handful are at some of the 54 volunteer fire companies in the city.
A ladder is included in the first response to all structure fires, except for single and two storey buildings in the rural outskirts of the city. The minimum personnel response is eighteen members. Included are the nbearest two six- man rescue pumpers, a two-man ladder, a two-person ambulance, and a two-person command car. In some areas, an additional two-man water tender also responds.
