Dennis Merryweather TL - GLW 424

Pervious pictures (numbers; 27269 and 27234) have shown the arrival of the Dennis Merryweather TL GLW 424. Today was time to put hin away in the 'shed' but unfortunately he had arrived facing the wrong direction. So today we performed a five point turn to reverse direction, which was a little difficult as no motive power currently exists. Using the winch of the Shelvoke SPV Emergency tender at one end and a tirfor at the other end the manoeuvre was successfully completed.

Interesting to see the origional grey behind the CTC extinguisher bracket.

Neal, I don't know if you are attaching significance to the 'original grey' following on from the discussion in posting picture 12550 where the original colour (either wartime grey or red) was debated. What is shown in the above photograph is the inside of the box seat locker which has all but vanished apart from the front face wood.

I actually believe that this grey is either just undercoat or the original colour of the inside of the lockers, for there is not a trace of grey anywhere on the metal work. It is either rust or red paint!

Barry I would not think in the middle of the war the locker insides would differ from the main body of the vehicle. The shade in the photo is spot on for dark battleship grey given the slight variations that occurred. Someone seems to have done a good job stripping ex NFS appliances. When we were doing up GLR 567 (K2 ATV) we only recently found the slightest trace of any grey buried away. A rub down with a cloth should indicate if it's top coat or primer. Given the location in a locker it would be easier to paint round the bracket than stand on your head to remove it.

Did you get the ladders 'rehoused' Barry ?

Added by Rick Loudon on 16 March 2011.
Rick, the pawls were free, but the sections of the ladder had rusted one into each other and will not slide under gravity. I am rather cautious about winching with a cable around the rounds so I am going to try pulling on a bar which I will fasten to the head of each section so that all the load is transferred vertically through each side rail.

Barry, glad to see you have rescued this one. Neal is quite right, it is one of the early NFS orders, all NFS supplied vehicles were definitely grey. Many Brigades after WWII went to great lengths to eliminate the NFS and grey vehicles, repaints were done by skilled craftsmen and carried out properly. What a fantastic collection you must have now!
Give the ladders a good soaking in diesel/parrafin mix and leave it for a week or two.
Best wishes
