Volkswagen Light Pump GKL 694W

Seen at the North West Museum of Transport, St Helens on 06/03/2011 This is a Volkswagen T2 Light Pump supplied in 1973 to the Central Electricity Generating Board at Liverpool. The appliance was built by Bainbridge and is now in the care of the Merseyside Fire Museum

The bodybuilder is Branbridge - see picture 27278. It could even be the same appliance though there are slight differences so may be from the same era. There is a Land Rover Branbridge low profile L4P ex Wolverhampton on this site too.

Pyrene had a virtually identical VW at the Commercial Motor Show in 1967. It had a Coventry Climax rear mounted 350 IGPM pump, a 100 IG tank and a single hose reel. The three door cab was very tight indeed!

The pitch was (I quote)that "you can put out 99% of fires with 100 gallons of water". No mention of foam, even though Pyrene was best known for building foam tenders back then...

From what I now know, I think even this skimpy specification must have overloaded the T2's payload capacity.

Suppose the factory crew cab was an attraction for body builders.
