Manchester Airport Merc Unimog Rescue TenderThis unique machine was photographed at the North Western Museum of Transport at St.Helens 6/03/2011 where it has languished awaiting restoration for about 20 years.
Operational photographs 16278 and 9 can be seen on this site. The Rescue Tender, most probably the first 'foreign' vehicle in the UK in the 1950s has a bodywork by Jennings and firefighting equipment by John Kerr was supplied to Manchester Airport where it served for many years.....it then went to Barton Aerodrome which is several miles to the north west of the city. The bell on the front bumper has been removed, the bracket can be seen.
It is owned by a guy living in North Wales who had the intention of restoring the machine to its former glory but alas nothing has been done thus far.....he is still paying rental for storage at the museum so hopefully one day it will be completed. The machine is not part of the public exhibit so I apologize for the poor photo
