In communities without tall buildings, a 75 foot ladder is just as useful as a 100 foot aerial, and these combination pumpers-ladders are much less expensive and more versatile than their bigger brothers.
They now often replace two older dedicated units, and they provide a more comprehensive array of options for the first responding crew of volunteers. If a rescue is called for, having the aerial out first may be critical - otherwise its the pumper which is needed.
This example's specvification is probably the most common, although they do often have a "full size" 500 gallon (1800 liter) tank. They typically also carry longer ground ladders than engines, usually 35 or 40 feet (11.5 to 13.0 meters). The hose load is often reduced, compared to a typical engine, but of course they are not intended to operate completely independently for any length of time at a serious incident. The crew cab is usually set up to accommodate either five or six.
