Introduced in 1994 in 4X4 form and later manufactured by Mowag as both a 4X4 and 6X6, the Duro is a military off-road chassis, mainly used for command, ambulance and various special-purpose tasks by eight countries' miltary and/or police forces.
The 4X4 version has now been discontinued, but saw service in several Swiss fire brigades. It was not exported because it was much more expensive than the equally capable small Unimogs. It had a relatively low payload and was mainly employed as a light rescue unit. The pump water tender version - which is illustrated here - had only a 1, 000 liter water tank capacity.
The Frutigen volunteer fire company protects a town of less than 7, 000 people and a sparsely populated surrounding rural area. This unit is still in service, along with a full size Scania 18 tonne 4X4 water tender, a pickup truck based light rescue vehicle and - unusually - a Sprinter BA tender.
