Interesting pump installation, utilizing the original LR rear mounted optional PTO configuration, which was primarily intended for operating agricultural equipment.
As this photo clearly illustrates, this tended to result in a rather shallow departure angle, potentially limiting this type of unit's usefulness off-road, and also hung a lot of weight behind the rear axle!
So, the Coventry Climax 500 GPM pump was often mounted instead behind the front bumper between the mudguards and powered by a crankshaft-driven PTO. For this reason, it barely affected the angle of approach and likely made for a better weight distribution, too. The rare Austin Gypsy fire tender had the same kind of configuration.
Many later long wheelbase LRs had a mid-mounted pump, which had no effect on off-road performance and probably also made for safer handling in general!
It was always a challenge to pack everything on to a Land-Rover, especially a short wheelbase version - which led to several conversions on forward control chassis, to the "stretched" 6X2 with a trailing axle and of course to the elongated tandem axle Range Rover too.
Now some firms are offering stretched 6X4 Dailys and 6X6 Sprinters in an effort to achieve the same goal of trying to "get a quart out of a pint pot"...
