RRE 121G ERF/HCB-Angus West Midlands
This ERF/HCB-Angus WrL was originally purchased by Staffordshire Fire Brigade in 1968 but passed to the West Midlands Fire Service in 1974 on boundary changes.
Seen here at Solihull on the 11th. August 1979 in its flourescent paint scheme applied to most West Midlands appliances at this time.

In Tayside we had one WTL, an F reg one, all red with only the rear bare aluminium with roller shutter doors, twin bumpers chrome/chevroned.
It was stationed at the long gone Station 2 Strathmore Avenue Dundee then finished up as a retained unit running alongside the wholetime P reg Dodge HCB-Angus at the long gone Station 3 Broughty Ferry now Balmossie. My father had driven it. He was in the brigade from 1962 - 1977.

These ERF WTs and PEs had a stepped down main frame, so that the crew cab floor and front floor were lower than the main frame. This explains the easy cab access, the giant front windscreen and the rather low slung front bumper on these appliances.
It was also a way of achieving a relatively low cab height, especially useful with the Snorkel chassis - which also saved space by having the engine between the rear seats, where it did not intrude on the driver's field of vision to the left side. This aspect of design copied common North American practice, pioneered by American La France in 1947, and was also a feature of the later Dennis Delta aerial chassis.
