Grimsby Peakes Lane 1964

As a companion to Rick Loudon's superb pic 21757 of Grimsby, now Humberside div HQ today, here is my shot of the line-up at the then brand-new Grimsby Borough HQ in 1964. L to R GXA 92 Dennis/Merryweather TLP, EJV 955 Dennis/Metz F17 TL, DEE 109 Dennis F12 P/S/ET, MEE 247 Dennis F24 PE, DEE 496 Dennis F8 P/WrT. Mercifully both the TLs are now in preservation.

Great photo, any idea if any of the other machines are still with us? especially the lovely F8 with its unusual colour scheme.

Royce, as the others have said, a super evocative photograph from times gone by. Do you know where GXA 92 is at this moment? GXA 95 which stood in for EJV955 in later years is with me. See: www.youtube.com/watch?v=E60ItcZr9lE

Dr Hutchinson - my apologies for stating that GXA 92 was in preservation. It was of course GXA 95, its successor at Grimsby that is preserved - and in your own good care, I believe! In reply to Matt as far as I am aware DEE109 DEE 496 and MEE 247 are no more - although I would be over the moon to hear to the contrary!

DEE 496 survived into the early Humberside Fire Brigade - I remember attending a Ben Fund event at Bridlington Fire Station in late 1976 or 1977 (when Humberside was split by the River Humber with no bridge) and seeing it there on the run as a brigade spare !

I own GXA 92 which is now on its way to being restored.

GXA 92 was I believe for some years near Lincoln on the Skegness Road ?

Mick I am pleased to hear that another Dennis has survived......I wonder if I could trouble you for the chassis number please. Feel free to email me directly if you wish....I would be interested to learn more about this machine which according to records I have was new to the NFS Coventry in 1944

What was there in Grimsby in 1964 which led to the Brigade operating two TLPs? Almost every British town of this size seems to have had only one aerial truck. At least until the snorkel craze of the late 1960s, when many county boroughs added a snorkel as well as a ladder - although most did not add any extra personnel!

The only exception I know about was York, which added a second TL in the aftermath of the Minster fire, in an abundance of caution. This was said to be because any reinforcement TL was deemed to be too far away, if it caught on fire again.

Fortunatey it is still standing, as good or perhaps even better than new!

Was this not when The F17 Metz ladder was to return to Germany for work and the Merryweather was bought as its temporaryreplacement...in which case this picture is either dated before the F17 went to Germany or, on its return ?...as an aside Grimsby also had a php ( elsewhere on this site) and in 1976 a new Dennis Simon SS220 HP which ran alongside the F17 TL

Added by Rick Loudon on 23 August 2014.
Rob- The second TL was a reserve machine. Like York, in the event of failure of the F17 a back-up appliance was a fair distance away. In this case 25 mls or more from Scunthorpe or Hull.
