Dennis F8 at Grimsby Central

This is another one of DEE 496 this time at its home station that I took in 1963. Though delivered in all red livery in 1952 it was defaced with alloy panels sometime between 1956 and 1961. The narrow body and short wheelbase made this appliance handy in dealing with the narrow streets and alleyways around the dock area. The Grimsby policy of a metal main ladder is of note.

hi
nice picture but ladder looks abit bigger than the appliance, also I see the old green goddess in this picture too, looks like the old 4x2 make, but it was in the time of the cold war threat of the 60's at the time of picture, could this green goddess been base there for back up.

Royce thanks for this picture, it is, as you say at the old Grimsby Central in Town Hall Square (the town hall is the building at the back of the pic ) the station is still there and is now a St John Ambulance building - as for the F8 it was still on the run when I joined Humberside in 1976 but was a spare pump I only saw it the once and that was at Bridlington !

Mark - The Green Goddess was NYV 79. As far as I am aware it was not "on the run" as back-up but was part of the pool of AFS appliances on loan from the Home Office - i.e. 2 Green Goddesses, 1 Transportable Water Unit(with 9 featherweight pumps), 1 Hose Laying lorry and 1 Pipe Laying Lorry.

Thanks Royce some more great pictures, cant wait for your book to be published. The building in the background is the Grimsby Borough Council municipal offices, with the town hall out of shot to the left of the picture. The old fire station is now boarded up. I was told by my dad that this appliance went out of service in 1965 following replacement by Dennis F36 CEE 999C. According to the Fire Brigade Handbook - Special Appliances: The Dennis F12 DEE 109 was in service beyond the Humberside take over until about 1975.

Dave,
I definately remember this appliance as a spare pump on the run at Bridlington 1976/7 - can you enlighten us more on the book ?

Always so glad to hear from people with knowledge of the GBFB. Sorry if you had assumed that my compiling a history implied that a book was on the way! I am afraid I have far too many blanks to fill in to contemplate that!
Dave, I am old enough to remember the Grimsby Municipal Offices being shrouded from top to bottom in camouflage netting! Only a kid at the time - but hence my keenness to contact anyone who can help me with details of the appliances of the War years in GY and prior to that. Can your Dad help Dave? Watch for a picture of an old timer I will upload shortly.

Sorry my dad had seen your articles in the Grimsby Evening Telegraph with and read with great interest and assumed there was going to be book? Not sure but my dad remembers all the GBFB appliances from 1952 onwards and has some photographs pre takeover but mainly of Humberside era. He would be pleased to help in any way he can.
