I must admit to liking the Unimog family. An almost classic design I have seen them tow Harriers, work in forestry and agriculture etc.
As a basis for a small fire appliance the design is well suited, although a few fleet managers and senior officers are put off by the price which I feel has always been too high.
The Unimog is close to being unique in terms of its off-road ability (enhanced on some models by four-wheel steering) and by its carrying capacity. Some French fire services have Unimogs with 6, 000 liter tanks (CGCFF).
But the great thing about Unimogs is that they are extremely well-built and very durable. This does somewhat offset the high initial price, and the chassis has a high resale value too.
There ere are many examples on this site of Unimogs which have been in service for thirty years or more.
