1927 American LaFrance w/85 foot Hale water tower
American LaFrance of Elmira, NY, built water tower for the city of Indianapolis IN in 1927. It was put in service at Station 13 in January of 1928. It was officially retired in 1969 when a new Snorkel was assigned to Station 13. It still runs.

San Francisco still has an even older Gorter water tower, totally preserved and sitting in a spare bay at one of their downtown stations when I last visited around twenty years ago.
I think the secret is that these were actually used very infrequently, but fire departments tended to hang on to them because - when on the rare occasions they were needed - they were for many years the only units which could provide elevated master streams of water...
