Make withdrawn TL`s 3 !

3 withdrawn TL`s from lothian and Borders FRS. D240 ELJ was bought from Dorset and served as a spare appliance at all the city stations that have height appliances. The Scania TL is G429 KBO ex North Yorkshire which was bought for spare parts and has never been operational with L&B. This appliance still has York on the cab doors. The final TL is F986 NRV the ex Tollcross TL which was bought second hand from Hampshire FRS at the end of 2001. The first incident this attended was a 12 pump, 5 aerial fire in the Cowgate in Edinburgh in early December 2001. It has since been replaced by a Scania TL bought from Mid and West Wales, reg no. E750 MDE.

The Scania TL G429KBO was originally from West Glamorgan at Morriston. Sold to North Yorkshire by Mid & West Wales Fire Service a few years ago it served in Harrogate and York.

It still carries the name York on the cab doors.

York on the doors and in Edinburgh? Wonder what the locals thought of that David? Similar thing occurred here earlier this year when one of Wrexham's MAN pumps went off the run and prior to going on the run at Dolgellau, their new MAN was temporarily allocated to Wrexham with Dolgellau station plate on. Another occasion to my knowledge was one of Merseyside's AEC TGM4R TL's MLV606F was loaned to Gloucester still with Merseyside on the machine.

The York TL has never been on the run in L&B, it`s just been kept at workshops on the outskirts of Edinburgh since they got it.

This T.L. MLV 606F was on loan from Liverpool to West Glamorgan Fire Service in 1985. It failed the Standard Test when it was extended and would not elevate, therfore taken off the run.

Is this practice of buying and selling old appliances a common practice in the UK? I should have thought that once a brigade had decided an appliance was no longer suitable as a front line or reserve unit, it would not be of much interest to another service.

I don't know about the rest of the UK. But up here in Tayside 3 of our ex-appliances went to Highland&Islands. 2 S plate Volvo FL614 E-One Wrl's which ended up at volunteer stations. Now at 2 separate retained stations in H&I and Perth's old ALP 02 plate Volvo FM12 which is now on the run in Inverness. The old L&B bought 2 ex Mid&West Wales TL's an E and G plate single cab Scania/Metz which are still on the run in Edinburgh.

A lot of ex uk appliances have ended up in different countries such as Ireland, Poland, Chile, Argentina etc

Perth I am sure would rather have the 02 plate alp than the carp they now run as an aerial , more for the reach than anything else , the 2 wrt/l that also went up north will be getting better usage than they were in the small volunteer stations where 2-6 calls per year are the norm, they are all Scottish fire and rescue now in anycase , Tayside bought new appliances every year and filtered them down through the outlying stations but its unlikely that luxury will be afforded them now that there are wholetime pumps in Edinburgh that are older than some osted to very quiet retained stations in the old Tayside area, my understanding is that the purchase of dedicated aerials are again being considered due to the restrictions of use that carps bring.
